We are so excited to share a gorgeous vintage inspired engagement shoot with you today! Engagement shoots are a great opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day and are the perfect excuse to get even more pictures of you and your partner. Making the most of the summer sun, the couple, Nell and Duncan, decided to get cosy in woods for their pre wedding photo shoot.
Sent in by Jerri from Big Love Wedding Photography, and set in a woodland in Caterham, these vintage inspired engagement shots are really something special. Jerri has captured the strong chemistry and obvious love between the two perfectly, (and no wonder!) as timeless, beautiful and romantic photography is her speciality. We love how natural the images are, from the wild woodland backdrop and details of nature to the flowers in Nell’s hair and the relaxed, ‘just wandering in the woods’, vibe. Nell and Duncan look so happy and head over heels in love.
Jerri’s background in art and design shines through in her attention to detail, evident in these images. From intricate forest leaves and pine cones to wellie-boots and the couple’s hands entwined, she has captured the smaller details which bring the overall shoot to life, creating special memories for the couple.
I’ve always been interested in people, ever since I was a child. My mum is an artist, we would spend hours in the art room painting and drawing portraits. My artistic flair continued into my adult life and I went on to university to gain a first in design and technology. This has given me the skills to create beautifully edited portraits and wedding images. I’ve always been fascinated by colour and shape. I like the thought of finding the extraordinary hidden inside the supposedly ordinary and find that each time I pick up my camera at weddings it takes me on a wonderfully new, visual journey. I’m interested in the world around me and excited by the thought of capturing (a record of) the “moment” – knowing that what I capture will be a memory for years to come. I genuinely care about each and every image I take and I hope this is clearly demonstrated in the love for my work as a photographer.
Here’s a little more from Jerri, to talk you through details of the shoot…
Sandra (Dive Wedding Photography) and I shot the engagement shoot together and we both get our inspiration from other great wedding photographers such as Ed Peers, Nordica photography, Jonas Peterson. We absolutely adore the whimsical, fine art style. Both of us styled the engagement shoot mainly using the props and clothes Sandra dug out! The dresses she had were gorgeous, I just wish we had more time to dress Nell up in everything we had. Nell and Duncan were fantastic on the shoot, really carefree and happy to get involved in all our ideas, as crazy as they might seem!
For the overall feel of the shoot, we wanted to create a 70s country vibe, lost in love with nature. We both love to incorporate the natural world into our shoots be it woodland, water, flowers or something different again. There are so many beautiful locations in England, why not show them off! Depending on the couple and how much time they have, we usually spend around 2 – 3 hours with a couple and encourage them to get as creative as they are happy to be! Sandra and I often work on shoots together when we can and, if one of us is booked up, then one of us will introduce the couple to the other. We both have similar styles and a great passion for creativity. We know the couple will be in great hands with either of us.
Ah, what a lovely way to kick of your wedding celebrations!
We asked Nell and Duncan a little more about how they met, their wedding day and the shoot…
How did you guys meet?
We were house mates in London back in 2007. We got together a few weeks after Nell moved in, and we’ve been together and living together ever since.
What’s your favourite trait in your future hubby/wife?
When we completed this question separately, we had both written the same thing! We both said that we loved the way the other person laughs.
What did you do for your first date?
We went to a little Moroccan restaurant around the corner from us for a breakfast smoothie. We were keeping things secret from the other house mates, so we snuck out at different times to meet.
Who proposed and how?
Duncan proposed whilst trekking in The Pyrenees, just north of Barcelona. Trekking is something we’ve done a lot together, and is always a special time for both of us. Duncan had planned to do this the year before whilst trekking in Nepal, but lost the ring!
Can you tell us a little about your wedding day?
It’s going to be a big wedding, but very rustic and home-made in a family barn in Kent. We along with Nell’s sister are doing all of the food, growing our own flowers, and Duncan’s brother (Tarquin of Southwestern Distillery) is giving us a load of his gin. We’re having a humanist ceremony, some Scottish dancing, and an 80s band to finish.
What are you looking forward to the most about your big day?
Duncan – seeing Nell in her dress, walking down the aisle. Nell- saying our vows in front of all our friends and family.
Did you enjoy your engagement shoot?
The whole engagement shoot was great. Jeri and Sandra made the whole day fun and relaxed.
What do you like most about Big Love Wedding Photography style?
That is really captures moments and emotions, and the fine art style.
